KAUA'I
Program to aid organic farmers to be explained

Certification under the National Organic Program will be the topic of a March 28 workshop on Kaua'i for beekeepers, ranchers, processor and handlers.

The workshop will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Lihu'e Library meeting room.

Louisa Wooten, chairwoman of Hawai'i Organic Farmers Association and co-owner of Kaua'i Kunana Farms, will lead the workshop. It will explain the steps to certification, compliance issues such as record-keeping, and information on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cost-Share Assistance Program.

The cost-share program is funded through 2010 and will reimburse eligible operations for 75 percent of their certification costs up to $750.

The workshop cost is $50 and includes a one-year membership in the organic farmers group. For more information, see www.hawaiiorganicfarmers.org.
