New Kalihi stoplights to be activated today

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann will activate new traffic signals at 10:30 a.m. today at the intersection of Gulick Avenue and Beckley Street in Kalihi.

"Installing these new signals is part of our comprehensive effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety across our island," Hannemann said in a news release. "Combined with public education and police enforcement, these signals should help make our streets safer for everyone," Hannemann said.

The intersection is located near Kalihi Waena Elementary School. Traffic signals were installed primarily to improve safety for pedestrians, especially children walking to and from school, city officials said. The project included curb ramps, pedestrian buttons, and pedestrian signals. Installing the signals cost $371,000.
