West Oahu boards disagree over Hoopili development project

Advertiser Staff

Members from two West Oahu neighborhood boards offered opposing views on the proposed Hoopili project in testimony before the state Land Use Commission today.

D.R. Horton Schuler Division is requesting urban classification from the commission for a development that would include up to 11,750 housing units as well as commercial development.

Celeste LaCuesta, a member of the Ewa Neigborhood Board, said there are enough homes on the books that have yet to be built in the West Oahu region.

But Kurt Fevella, the Ewa board's chairman, testified that the development would bring new housing opportunities and other amenities to the area for both the current and his daughter's generations.

Maeda Timson, chairwoman of the Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale neighborhood Board, also testified in support of the project while fellow board member Kioni Dudley heads the Friends of Makakilo, a group that is raising objections to the project.

Neither the Ewa nor Kapolei boards have taken official positions on the project.

Sandwiched between Kapolei, Ewa and Waipahu, the Hoopili project could rival the number of homes in Mililani. The city's rail project is expected to run through it.
