Fresh off a Division II state championship year, the Pac-Five softball team is proving to be a handful for DI teams as well so far this season.

The Wolfpack rallied past Maryknoll, 6-2, yesterday at Ala Wai Field to improve to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The victory is their second straight over a DI opponent, following last week's 4-2 win at Punahou.

"We want to do even better than last year," said Pac-Five junior left fielder Samantha Ford, who slammed a two-run triple yesterday to highlight a six-run fifth inning. "I think (the ILH race) is wide open this season ... Anybody can beat anybody; it just depends on who brings their mental game."

Yesterday's game tested the Wolfpack's patience, as they managed only one hit off Spartans ace Ariel Silva through the first four innings. Maryknoll (0-1) had taken a 2-0 lead in the third after sacrifice flies by Hillary Uekawa and Silva.

But Silva — a returning first-team ILH all-star who helped lead the Spartans to a DI state tournament berth in 2008 — has been battling through a hip injury this season and started to lose some velocity in the fifth.

Keline Yoshimura led off with a walk, and Alena Ho'okano reached on an error one out later. After Breeann Choy's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Joedee Lovell stroked a ground single up the middle to bring home Yoshimura, and Chante Tesoro followed with a run-scoring single to score Ho'okano and tie it 2-2.

Lovell then scored on a wild pitch, and Tatum Tokuda hit a sharp single to left.

Ford then sent a deep drive over the head of Uekawa in center field, scoring Tesoro and Tokuda to make it 5-2.

"I just had to relax," said Ford, who popped up to short and flied to center in her first two at-bats. "(The pitch) was a little high but down the middle, and at first I thought (Uekawa) would catch up to it."

Ford circled the bases to third, then scored on a wild pitch for a 6-2 lead.

"We're a pretty good hitting team, and I thought it was just a matter of time before we would get our timing down," said first-year Wolfpack coach Cecil Hasegawa.

Maryknoll coach John Uekawa blamed himself for putting Silva in a bad position.

"Ariel's hip has been bothering her, she's been going to the chiropractor and getting shiatsu (treatment)," he said. "You could tell she was wearing down, and that's my error — I should have taken her out earlier. That was a critical mistake."

Pac-Five starter Sheridan Mahelona, meanwhile, remained steady and continued to get help from her defense.

Silva got a one-out single in the sixth but was erased on a force play at second and Mahelona got another groundout to end the inning. Maryknoll put runners at first and third with one out in the seventh, but second baseman Choy caught a line drive and stepped on the bag for a game-ending double-play.
