Swimming: Cal sets record in freestyle relay at NCAAs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — California's 800-yard freestyle relay team set an American record of 6 minutes, 52.69 seconds, helping the Golden Bears overtake Arizona for first place on Day 2 of the three-day NCAA women's swimming and diving championships at Texas A&M.

Dana Vollmer, who also set a meet record by swimming the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:42.01, swam the anchor leg of the relay for Cal.

California finished the day with 302 points. Georgia is in second with 295.5 points and Arizona dropped to third with 282.5 points.

The top three finishers in the 400-yard individual medley broke the meet record, which was set in 1992. Stanford's Julia Smit claimed the event in a new American record time of 4:00.56.

Rebecca Soni of Southern California set a meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke final with a 58.36.
