All about the lei of the land

There's two days left to head over to "A Celebration of Hawaiian Lei Making" at the Academy Art Center at Linekona. The free event started yesterday but has a full schedule of traditional and contemporary lei-making demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow.

The celebration features discussions on basic methods by noted lei-makers Roy Benham; Bill Char; Charlene, Brian and Reynold Choy; Suzan Harada; Paulette Kahelepuna; Renee Koyama; Velma Omura and Happy and Kats Tamanaha. In addition, guests can look at photographs and watch video presentations and hula performances and see who wins the "Iron Lei Maker Challenge" starting at 10 a.m. today.

Tomorrow at 1:15 p.m., a panel will discuss "Planning and Maintaining a Lei Garden."
