UH's Friesen places 13th in 3-meter event at NCAAs

University of Hawai'i junior Emma Friesen finished 13th in the 3-meter dive at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at College Station, Texas.

Friesen, of North Vancouver, B.C., placed 10th in qualifying for the 3-meter and competed in the consolation final.

She finished with 306.30 points in the consolation final.

Christina Loukas of Indiana won the 3-meter with a score of 365.75. Duke's Abby Johnston finished second and Texas' Shelby Cullinan was third.

The previous day, Friesen placed third in the 1-meter final.


TENNIS

HAWAI'I MEN REBOUND

The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team, ranked No. 75, beat No. 56 Middle Tennessee, 4-1, on the second day of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic yesterday at Montgomery, Ala.

Hawai'i won two of three doubles matches, then clinched the win in singles play by taking three of four completed matches.

Leo Rosenberg, Sascha Heinemann and Jeff Fitch won singles matches for the Warriors (3-5).

Two other singles matches were abandoned.

The Warriors will conclude their first appearance in the tournament by playing No. 41 Oklahoma today in the consolation bracket at 7 a.m. (Hawai'i time).

BYUH TEAMS SWEEP

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, swept Division I opponents Alabama State and Tuskegee yesterday at Montgomery, Ala.

BYU-Hawai'i (15-0) beat Alabama State, 7-0, with Elwen Li, Yuan Jia, Jenny Chin, Wen-Lin Wang, Shawni Porter and Ayako Ikeda sweeping their opponents, and BYUH won three doubles matches.

In the 5-0 victory over Tuskegee, Li and Jia swept their foes, and the Seasiders won all three doubles matches. Four singles matches were abandoned.

The BYU-Hawai'i men, ranked No. 25, beat Alabama State and Tuskegee, both by 6-0 scores.

BYUH's Agnel Peter, Romeo Juhasz and Joseph Beck won singles matches in both contests.


WRESTLING

LOW GOES 1-1 AT NCAAS

UC Davis sophomore Brandon Low, a 2006 Saint Louis School alum, went 1-1 in consolation matches yesterday at the NCAA Wrestling Tournament at St. Louis, Mo.

Low, competing in the 133-pound division, beat UC Davis' Filip Novachkov, 7-3, in the wrestleback fourth round.

Navy's Joe Baker beat Low in a fifth-round match, 5-3.
