Events being held to remind Big Island residents of Mauna Loa threat

HILO — To mark the 25th anniversary of Mauna Loa's last eruption, several agencies will hold events to remind Big Island residents of volcano hazards and discuss when the mountain may erupt again.

Officials from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, University of Hawaii-Hilo Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes, Hawaii County Civil Defense and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will attend the meetings, scheduled for Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at University Classroom Building 100/127 at UH-Hilo, 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Jude Episcopal Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, and 10 a.m. to noon April 4 at Konawaena Elementary School cafeteria in Kealakekua.
