Rookie MPD officer fired after federal charges surface

A Maui Police Department rookie officer was terminated from employment after she was indicted last month on federal charges alleging she enticed a minor to engage in sexual activity.

The two-count indictment against Angelique Abbott was filed Feb. 6 in the Southern District of Florida, according to court records. The indictment says Abbott used the mail or other interstate means to "persuade, induce and entice" someone under age 18 to engage in illegal sexual activity from December 2006 to Feb. 23, 2007.

It also alleges that she traveled interstate on Feb. 23, 2007, to engage in illegal sexual conduct with the juvenile.

Abbott was ordered to appear to be arraigned today in U.S. District Court in Miami.

Because the case is pending, the U.S. attorney's office in Miami wouldn't comment beyond the indictment, said spokeswoman Alicia Valle.

After the indictment was filed Feb. 6, Abbott was arrested on Maui and made an initial appearance Feb. 25 in U.S. District Court in Honolulu, court records show. At a hearing two days later, a judge allowed her to be released on home detention in Hana on a $50,000 bond. She was ordered to have no contact with anyone under age 18 without approved adult supervision.

Police spokesman Lt. Wallace Tom said police couldn't release information on the federal charge.

"Angelique Abbott was a probationary employee who was released from employment after no longer qualifying for police duty due to her federal indictment status," according to Tom. "She remains under federal investigation, which we were unaware of until recently, at which time she was arrested and detained by federal law enforcement agents.

"We do know that these charges originated from an alleged criminal act that occurred out of the state of Hawaii and before she applied with the Maui Police Department."

Abbott was part of the 69th Recruit Class that graduated in November. She had been assigned to the Lahaina Patrol District and was undergoing training in the field with an experienced police officer.
