KA'ANAPALI
One of two pedestrians hit by chartered bus has died

One of two elderly pedestrians struck by a charter bus March 13 in Kaanapali has died, Maui police said yesterday.

Police said Leo Nekus, 81, of Lahaina, died Monday.

A 79-year-old woman who also was struck by the bus was in stable condition at Maui Memorial Hospital, police said.

Nekus is Maui County's fourth traffic fatality of 2009, compared to five at this time last year.

Nekus and the woman were crossing Honoapi'ilani Highway when they were hit by a bus turning onto the highway from Kai Ala Drive. The bus, driven by a 66-year-old Kahului man, was carrying 13 hotel workers on a commuter route. No one on the bus was injured.
