BIG ISLAND
Agencies warning residents of hazards from Mauna Loa

To mark the 25th anniversary of Mauna Loa's last eruption, several agencies are joining together for events aimed at reminding Big Island residents of volcano hazards and discuss when the mountain may erupt again.

Officials from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes, Hawai'i County Civil Defense and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park will attend the meetings, scheduled for Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at University Classroom Building 100/127 at UH-Hilo and 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Jude Episcopal Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, and 10 a.m. to noon April 4 at the Konawaena Elementary School cafeteria in Kealakekua.

Mauna Loa last erupted March 25, 1984. Its fast-moving lava flows advancing to within 4 miles of Hilo city limits in a matter of days.

Observatory geologist Frank Trusdell said many new residents may not be aware that Mauna Loa is an active volcano, while longtime residents may have forgotten the potential hazards posed by an eruption.
