Wastewater flows from manhole on Lipoa Street

About 5,100 gallons of wastewater flowed from a sewer manhole on Lipoa Street on Maui yesterday when grease clogged a main line, Maui County's Department of Environmental Management said.

The overflow was discovered at 12:30 p.m. and stopped at 1:30 p.m., the department said.

An undisclosed amount of wastewater that the department described as "small" entered a storm drain but was contained and did not reach the ocean.

Some 2,000 gallons of standing water was removed from Lipoa Street and the area was disinfected. Warning signs were posted and bacteriological analysis was performed.
