HPU splits with Dixie St.

Courtney Kessell pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks as 11th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific beat Dixie State, 2-0, yesterday in the opener of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at St. George, Utah.

Tajia Acierto hit a solo homer and Nicole Riviera an RBI single in the fourth for the Sea Warriors (24-4, 12-2). Bailie Hicken had both hits for the Red Storm (25-5, 14-4).

In the second game, Haley Schumers hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth as Dixie State won in extra innings, 5-4.

Acierto hit a two-run homer, Ciera Senas batted 3 for 5 and Kozy Toriano went 3 for 3 for the second straight game to lead HPU, which amassed 14 hits but stranded 13 runners.

Schumers and Jaki Hawkins each had two RBIs for Dixie State.

CHICO TOPS HPU

Adam Arakawa, a 2005 Moanalua High graduate, hit a two-run double during a three-run sixth inning to help Chico State beat Hawai'i Paci-fic, 5-3, yesterday in a nonconference game at Chico, Calif.

Pete Mickartz pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Wild-cats (16-13). Lester Akeo had two hits and an RBI for HPU (19-8).
