Surfing: 4 Team Hawaii females go unbeaten in opening round of World Junior

Advertiser Staff

The four female surfers on Team Hawaii went undefeated in the first round of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship contest today.

The first round of the Girls 18 division and second round of the Boys 18 division were run in 4- to 5-foot waves at Salinas, Ecuador.

Hawaii surfers Leila Hurst, Malia Manuel, Nage Melamed and Alessa Quizon each posted an impressive first-round win.

In the Boys 18 division, Kauai's Dylan Goodale remained undefeated with a second-round win. However, fellow Hawaii surfers Tanner Hendrickson, Albee Layer and Kyle Galtes lost their respective second-round heats.

The contest follows a double-elimination format, so Hendrickson, Layer and Galtes will have one more chance in the repechage rounds.

The week-long contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 18 and younger.
