Statement by Bill Meheula, attorney for Native Hawaiians who sued state

Bill Meheula is the lawyer for four Native Hawaiians who also filed suit against the state seeking a moratorium on the sale of ceded lands.

These are his comments on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision:

"Today's USSC decision correctly ruled that HSC has exclusive jurisdiction to determine whether State would breach fiduciary duties under State law by selling ceded lands before Native Hawaiian claim to those lands is resolved. State law provides that 1893 overthrow was illegal. USSC rejected State's requested ruling that the Newlands Resolution precludes an injunction under state law. "
