State lawmakers are going to extend the current legislative session by two days through May 8.

Lawmakers say this will give them time before the new fiscal year starts on July 1 to override any vetoes by the governor of budget bills they've passed.

That's because the state constitution says the governor only has 10 days to decide whether to veto bills presented to her 10 or more days before the Legislature adjourns.

The governor would have 45 days from the date of adjournment to veto the bills if the legislature adjourned less than 10 before presenting the bills to her.

The state's budget might not be ready before July if the governor went ahead and vetoed the bills under those circumstances.
