Hula community gathers July 26-31

Ka 'Aha Hula 'O Halauaola Hula Conference 2009, a biannual gathering of hula teachers and students, cultural practitioners and artists, will take place July 26-31 on the Kapalama campus of Kamehameha Schools.

The theme this year is "Ku Ana Ka Hula I Ka Maka Ulu Ola," "Hula transforms the center of life's inspiration."

More than 100 presenters are expected to offer dawn-to-dark activities.

This is the third conference sponsored by the Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation and Kauahea Inc. Chairwoman is kumu hula Leina'ala Kalama Heine. Conference presentations are being worked out.

Registration is $375 adults, $275 elders, $175 children. No day rates are available. The conference has arranged for special rates at several hotels and will offer bus transportation to the campus.

In addition, a two-and-a-half day pre-conference workshop will be offered July 23-25. Cost is $150 plus materials costs.
