An unusual plumeria lei crafted out of flowers with their petals snipped off earned Reginald Juan Dela Cruz the Mayor's Grand Prize Friday at the city's 82nd Lei Day Celebration at Kapi'olani Park.

The celebration began at 9 Friday morning. It is free and open to the public.

Earlier in the day, Lauren Chang was formally presented as Lei Queen, with Jodie Miyagi as First Princess and Kalai Kamauoha as Second Princess.

The Royal Hawaiian Band, Kapena, Na Wahine O Ka Hula Mai Ka Puuwai, Manao Company, Na Kupuna O Koolau and Halau Hula O Hokulani were scheduled to perform throughout the day.

Another special attraction was Tutu's Hale.

Keiki who visited heard stories, learned a song and a hula, and got lessons in lei making and lauhala weaving.
