Kaufman sets UH jump record

Advertiser Staff

A school record high jump by All-American Amber Kaufman helped the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team cap a strong performance in the Steve Scott Invitational yesterday at Anteater Track Stadium in Irvine, Calif.

Kaufman leaped 6 feet, 3/4 inches to break her own mark of 6-1/2 set at last year's Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. Kaufman finished second to Olympian Sharon Day, who also cleared 6-3/4 — the third-best mark in the country this season — but made fewer misses.

UH freshman TeRina Keenan placed second in the discus with a regional qualifying throw of 159-4.

During the two-day meet, the Rainbow Wahine had four regional qualifying marks and 12 personal bests.

"This was probably the best team performance we've ever had at one meet," said ninth-year head coach Carmyn James. "All in all it was a great week."

BASEBALL

HPU FALLS SHORT

Hawai'i Pacific split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader with host Grand Canyon yesterday — winning the opener 9-7, losing the second game 7-4 — to finish second in the conference standings.

Cheynne Hirota and Les Akeo each had three hits in the opener for the Sea Warriors (14-10), who needed a sweep to tie Dixie State (15-9) for the PacWest title. Aaron Asher had two hits in the second game for HPU, which is 28-17 overall.

SOFTBALL

HPU WON'T HOST

Pacific West Conference champion Hawai'i Pacific was denied a regional host role and instead will travel to fellow PacWest member Dixie State in St. George, Utah to play in a four-team, double-elimination West Regional starting Friday.

The Sea Warriors, who finished the regular season 40-10 overall and 22-4 in the PacWest, play UC-San Diego (29-21) in the first round. Dixie State, which was 36-10 and 19-5, meets Cal State Monterey Bay (36-25-1) in the other game.
