Barbecue fire damages home in military housing complex

A fire that started with a barbecue grill heavily damaged a home in a military housing complex near Pearl Harbor last night.

The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. at 3323 McKeen Place in the Halemoku Naval Housing area. The blaze was brought under control about 15 minutes later, but not before it caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, said Capt. Terry Seelig, fire department spokesman.

Two people were at home when the fire broke out, but there were no injuries, Seelig said.

He said the couple had started a propane grill on the lanai of their home and went inside to get some food. Somehow the propane tank released some gas and sent a fireball into the house, Seelig said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
