Helicopter helps firefighters recover body of woman

The Maui Fire Department helicopter took firefighters into an inaccessible area of Huelo Monday afternoon to recover the body of a woman found at the base of a 180-foot waterfall.

A visitor hiking in the area reported finding a body about 1:45 p.m. Monday, said fire Capt. Jack Williams.

Firefighters from Engine 2 in Pa'ia responded first to the call, but the visitor was unfamiliar with the area and a cell phone used to call rescuers kept dropping calls, Williams said.

Firefighters and the department helicopter were called in to assist with the search, which ended about 2:20 p.m. when the body of a woman, possibly in her 20s, was found in a pond at the base of a waterfall off Door of Faith Road, Williams said.
