Merkle leads state girls golf

Moanalua's Kristina Merkle, the defending champion, opened with a 73 yesterday at the Royal Ka'anapali.

Defending champion Kristina Merkle of Moanalua shot a 2-over-par 73 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the HHSAA/David Ishii Foundation Golf Championships yesterday at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course on Maui.

Cassy Isagawa (Baldwin), Alina Ching (Punahou) and Kelli Oride (Kaua'i) were tied for second. Nani Yanagi (Waiakea) was a 75 with Hayley Young (Mid-Pacific) and Cyd Okino (Punahou) at 77.

Punahou leads the team competition with a 229 three-player total. Baldwin is second at 233 and Waiakea third at 236.
