Fresno State baseball routs Hawaii, 17-9

Dusty Robinson drove in five runs and Fresno State crushed Hawai'i, 17-9, in the Western Athletic Conference series opener at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

Matt Morse (2-2) went seven-plus innings, allowing nine runs for the Bulldogs (23-25 overall, 7-10 WAC).

Jayson Kramer lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs for the Rainbows (27-21, 9-11), who have dropped six consecutive conference games. Jesse Moore (0-1) allowed four runs in two innings for the fifth-place Rainbows are just a half-game in front of the sixth-place Bulldogs.

Hawai'i jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first. Ryan Morford led off with a single to short and took second on Greg Garcia's bunt single to third. Vinnie Catricala's single to left loaded the bases. Kevin Macdonald grounded out to third to advance the runners. Kolten Wong fouled out to third and Landon Hernandez grounded out to third to leave runnres at second and third.

Fresno State came back with two in the bottom of the first. Dusty Robinson's solo home run to left tied it at 1 with one out. Alan Ahmady doubled to left-center and went to third on Tom Mendonca's chop single to second. Brennan Gowens grounded out to first, scoring Ahmady and sending Mendonca to second, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

The Rainbows regained the lead with a three-run second. Sean Monplaisir led off with a double to left-center, but he was out trying for third on Jeffrey Van Doornum's bunt back to the pitcher that allowed him to reach first on a fielder's choice. Van Doornum went to third on Matt Roquemore's single to right. Morford's sacrifice fly tied the game at 2. Garcia doubled to right to send Roquemore to third. Catricala's twor-run single to left put UH ahead, 4-2.

The Bulldogs scored three in the second to chase Kramer. Trent Garrison and Isacc Vivas each walked on four pitches with one out. Danny Muno's double to center sent Vivas to third and pulled FSU to 4-3. Robinson's double to left gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead. Kramer was pulled for Jesse Moore. Ahmady was hit by a pitch, but Mendonca grounded back to Moore for an inning ending double play.

Hawai'i took the lead again. Montplaisir led off the fourth with a homer to left-center to tie the game at 5. Van Doornum singled to center and took second on Roquemore's sacrifice. Morse's pick-off throw to second was wild, allowing Van Doornum to take third. Morford's sacrifice fly to center put UH ahead, 6-5.

The Bulldogs sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run fourth to take the lead. Danny Muno reached on third baseman Catricala's throwing error and Robinson walked. Ahmady grounded to short, where Garica forced Muno out at third, leaving runners at first and second. Mendonca walked to load the bases. Gowens' two-run single to center put FSU ahead again, 7-6, as Mendonca stopped at second. Moore was pulled for Ryan Davis. The runners advanced when Hedstrom grounded out to the pitcher. Pinch hitter Steve Detwiler walked to load the bases. Garrison's two-run single sent Detwiler to third and made it 9-6. Isacc Vivas' single scored Detwiler and moved Garrison to third. Muno's ground-rule double to right made it 11-6. Robinson's two-run single made it 13-6.

Fresno State added a run in the seventh to make it 14-6.

Hawai'i got three in the eighth on a two-run homer by Kolten Wong and RBI double from Roquemore to pull UH to 14-9.

The Bulldogs added three in the eighth on a solo homer by Garrison and two-run homer by Ahmady to make it 17-9.
