Police say Miloli'i man killed in shooting was intruder

A man who was shot to death at a Ka'u home Wednesday night has been identified as Larry Kuahuia of Miloli'i, Big Island police said.

Police were called to a home on Koa Lane in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates at about 10:30 p.m. after someone reported a shooting. Police found Kuahuia lying near the home, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Kuahuia died at the scene.

Police said Kevin Metcalfe, 47, was at home when he discovered an intruder on his property. The intruder, identified by police as Kuahuia, was approaching a greenhouse where police said Metcalfe allegedly was raising marijuana plants.

Metcalfe allegedly shot at Kuahuia at least twice with a 12-gauge shotgun as Kuahuia was running off the property. Metcalfe was arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in police custody yesterday pending charges.

Police recovered a shotgun at the scene.
