WAIPI'O — Fending off and responding to one comeback attempt after another, the Kamehameha girls water polo team advanced to the championship game.

Nanea Fujiyama scored five goals, Kiley Doane had four and Kamehameha held off a furious rally to advance to the title game of the Local Motion/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association State Championships with a 14-11 win over Roosevelt in last night's semifinals at the Veterans' Memorial Aquatic Center.

Kamehameha (7-5) will face fellow Interscholastic League of Honolulu member, defending champion and top-seeded Punahou (10-0) in today's 3 p.m. championship game. It is a rematch of last year's state championship game.

Punahou advanced by beating Kahuku 17-6 in the semifinals.

"Every time they scored, it just drove us," Fujiyama said. "We knew it shouldn't have been that close. We weren't playing our game tonight, at least not on defense."

Down 7-4 at halftime, Roosevelt closed to 9-8 on Rachel Gomes' goal from the leftside with 1:36 left.

Fujiyama scored 18 seconds later, then capitalized on a 5-meter penalty shot with 29 seconds remaining to make it 11-8.

Doane scored 30 seconds into the fourth quarter after her shot hit the right post and entered the goal to make it 12-8. Tiffany Tran responded 20 seconds later to cut the deficit to 12-9, but Brittney Garrigan's goal extended the lead to 13-9 with 5:59 left.

"Our coach, Britt Kamai, she knows how to speak to us and get us pumped," Fujiyama said.

Gomes' goal cut it to 13-10 with 4:49 remaining, but Fujiyama scored again with 2:22 left to make it 14-10. Taesha-Marie Keola's back-handed shot trimmed it to 14-11 with 1:26 left. Keola led Roosevelt with five goals.

"We couldn't adjust to T (Keola)," Fujiyama said. "She played awesome."

PUNAHOU WINS

Top-seeded and defending champion Punahou (10-0) scored 10 goals while holding Kahuku scoreless in the first half en route to to a 17-6 semifinal win.

"Our defense, my twin sister Chauncey (Hirose-Hulbert) and Mar-Lynn (Long), they're our primary guards and defense has been a strong point this season," said Punahou's Brailey Hirose-Hulbert, who finished with five goals, including three in the first quarter to help the Buffanblu lead 6-0.

Kahuku (14-3) broke through 39 seconds into the third quarter on Kelsea Krebs' goal with 6:21 remaining. Brooke Roy led the Red Raiders with two goals.
