One man was charged and another arrested yesterday in separate killings in the Islands.

On the Big Island, Kevin Metcalfe, 47, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, faces murder charges in a fatal shooting Wednesday night in Ka'u.

And on the Leeward side of O'ahu, a 44-year-old man was arrested yesterday in the Friday night beating death of a 49-year-old Ma'ili man.

Honolulu police Lt. Bill Kato said the man was arrested at about 11 a.m. yesterday in the Wai'anae Valley Road area. The beating was sparked by an argument, but the subject of the dispute had not been determined, Kato said.

The weapon used was an iron bar, Kato said.

The fatal beating happened sometime before 9:40 p.m. Friday at a home on Hakeakea Street. Emergency personnel reported that the victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken in critical condition to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he later died.

In the Big Island case, Ka'u patrol officers on Wednesday responded to a 10:33 p.m. report of a shooting at a Koa Lane home in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and found a man lying on Koa Lane near the scene of the shooting.

Big Island detectives said Metcalfe had been at his home around 10:30 p.m. when he discovered an intruder on his property approaching a greenhouse where marijuana plants allegedly grew. Metcalfe shot at the man at least twice with a 12-gauge shotgun, police said.

The victim, 44-year-old Larry Kuahuia of Miloli'i, ran off the property but collapsed on Koa Lane. He died at the scene.

Police recovered the shotgun and took Metcalfe into custody. Detectives charged Metcalfe with second-degree murder and firearm counts on Friday. Metcalfe continues to be held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

An autopsy on Friday showed Kuahuia died from shotgun wounds to the back.
