Mililani rallies past Campbell

Mililani scored four runs in a wild top of the seventh inning sequence last night to rally past Campbell, 4-2, in the first round of the DataHouse/ HHSAA Softball Division I State Championships.

A near-capacity crowd of about 1,200 at Rainbow Wahine Stadium watched the O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Trojans (13-3) advance to today's 1 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 4 seed Waiakea (12-0).

For six innings, it appeared that Campbell ace Katie Manuma would snap Mililani's streak of four straight title game appearances. She limited the Trojans to four hits and one walk while striking out six.

The Sabers (12-4, OIA fifth place) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Brittney Garcia's RBI single, then made it 2-0 in the fourth after Randi Schoening's run-scoring single.

But Courtney Senas led off the Mililani seventh with a double, and she scored on an infield error to make it 4-1.

Then with two outs and the bases loaded, Celina Garces hit a ground ball to the left side but the throw home went astray, allowing pinch-runner Toni Baysa to score. A second throw to home also went astray, allowing pinch-runner Sierra Mendiola and Andi Felise to score as the Campbell defense watched in stunned confusion.

"We gave the game to them," Sabers coach David Perreira said. "It looked like we were loose in the first six innings, but in the seventh suddenly we just tightened up and didn't make the plays."

Campbell had two singles and put runners at first and third in the bottom of the seventh, but Trojans starter Kishti Kamaka induced a foul pop-up to catcher Rebecca Lee to end the game.
