Freshman Lorens Chan shot an opening-round 2-under-par 69 yesterday to help 'Iolani take an 11-stroke lead in the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf Championships at Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course on Maui.

Chan parlayed a strong start with two birdies and an eagle (the uphill, 460-yard par-5 sixth) on the front nine to forge a two-stroke lead over a trio of golfers entering today's final round.

Punahou's Bradley Shigezawa, Kaua'i's Cory Oride and Kamehameha-Maui's Aaron Kunitomo each shot 71. Baldwin's Justin Keiley is alone in fifth at 72.

The Raiders shot a team aggregate score of 299, with David Fink (74), Reo Saito (75) and Elliot Le (81) joining Chan.

"Our 1, 2 and 3 golfers played well today," said 'Iolani coach Glenn Inouye. "We are just going to go out and play our game tomorrow. They will need to battle for every stroke. We haven't played this course with the strong trade winds so the boys will have to adjust their playing strategy in order to play smart."

Waiakea is second at 310 with defending champion Punahou third at 311.
