Feral goat hunting sessions planned on Kauai

LIHU‘E, KAUA‘I -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife is opening up “Hunting Unit F” on Kaua’i as part of efforts to control the feral goat population.

Opening the area to hunting was approved by the Kaua‘i Aquatic Life and Wildlife Advisory Committee on March 5.
Only archery and muzzle-loader hunting will be allowed due to safety concerns. Interested individuals will need to show a valid hunting license and will be required to sign an animal control permit. Animal control permits will be available at the Lihu‘e Division of Forestry and Wildlife office at 3060 ‘Eiwa St. Rm. 306 Lihu‘e.
Archery only hunting will be permitted from July 4 through Nov. 29 on weekends and State holidays. The limit will be two feral goats (either sex) per hunter per day. Animals may be de-boned in the field. Blaze orange will not be required for the archery only season. The ongoing pig hunting season will continue as scheduled.
The muzzle-loader hunting period will extend from Dec. 5 to 2 on weekends and state holidays. The limit will be two feral goats (either sex) per hunter per day. Animals may be de-boned in the field. A blaze-orange vest, shirt or jacket is required in the field. The ongoing pig hunting season will continue as scheduled.
There is no limit on the number of times a person can participate. Hunter access to Unit F is permitted through Waimea Valley. Hunters will be required to check in and out at the Waimea Valley, Waimea Heights, Mango tree, or Koke‘e hunter check stations.
Camping permits are required for over night hunting trips into Waimea Canyon and are available at the Lihu‘e Forestry and Wildlife Office during normal working hours. Hunters who wish to camp at Polihale Beach or Koke‘e State Park must obtain their camping permits from the State Parks office on their island.
