Lowered flags will honor law enforcement officers

U.S. and state flags will be flown at half-staff tomorrow, when Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed.

Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered state flags to be lowered in conjunction with an order from President Obama to lower the U.S. flag in honor of the nation's law enforcement officers.

"The first responsibility of government is to protect the lives of its citizens," Lingle said in a statement. "The men and women who serve in Hawai'i's law enforcement are among our first responders who put their lives in danger in order to ensure the safety and well being of others.

"We honor the service and the sacrifice of the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and we are eternally grateful for their commitment to watch over our communities."
