Hawai'i Pacific sweeps top awards on All-PacWest team

Hawai'i Pacific swept the major awards on the 2009 All-Pacific West Conference softball team announced yesterday.

Senior shortstop Krystal Plunkett earned her second Player of the Year honor; senior Courtney Kessell was chosen Pitcher of the Year; designated player Maile Kim was named Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, and Bryan Nakasone was selected Coach of the Year in his first season as head coach.

Plunkett led the PacWest in batting average (.477) and slugging percentage (.761). She was also third in the conference with nine home runs. Kessell compiled a 20-8 record and 1.58 ERA while finishing second in the PacWest with 116 strikeouts. Kim started every game for the Sea Warriors, and was fourth in the conference with a .412 average.

Junior pitcher Sherise Musquiz, who was 21-4 with a 1.19 ERA, and sophomore catcher Kozy Toriano also earned first-team berths. Toriano also was chosen as a utility player on the second team, joining teammates Casey Sugihara (second base) and Tajia Acierto (outfield).

Brigham Young-Hawai'i third baseman Ivy Sessions and Hawaii-Hilo outfielder Sierra Green also were named to the second team.
