Mililani scored three runs off two Waiakea errors and held off the Warriors, 5-3, yesterday in DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Division I State Championship quarterfinal action.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Trojans (14-3) will face No. 1 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ 'Iolani (14-1) in today's 7 p.m. feature semifinal at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Mililani routed Waiakea, 16-4, in last year's semifinals, but the No. 4 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champions (12-1) proved to be much sharper yesterday.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after three hits, including Jaimee Aiwohi's run-scoring single, but Waiakea tied it in the bottom half on Malania Eseroma's RBI single to right.

Mililani made it 2-1 in the third after Rebecca Lee scored on a fielder's-choice grounder by Kishti Kamaka, and the Trojans added two more runs when Glenelle Nitta's fly ball was dropped in left field.

The Warriors closed to 4-3 in the bottom of the third after Sloane Thomas' two-run single, but Mililani got a run back in the fifth on another Waiakea error.

"We gave up only five runs the whole (BIIF) season, and we gave up five today," Warriors coach Bo Saiki said. "The dropped ball and the bad throw — that cost us three runs right there."

The Trojans scored four runs off three errors in Wednesday's 4-2 first-round victory over Campbell.

"Every defensive play counts," said Mililani coach Rose Antonio. "If you make an error in this tournament, it can cost you the game."
