Two people died and three others were injured in three separate accidents that closed Kamehameha Highway and choked H-1 Freeway traffic at the 'Ewa off-ramp yesterday.

The flurry of accidents in Hau'ula, Ka'a'awa and 'Ewa started around midday and lasted for a couple of hours, forcing the road closures and inconveniencing thousands of motorists in Central and Windward O'ahu who were detoured or stuck waiting until the roads were reopened.

Just after noon yesterday, a man in his 60s was killed when his tractor trailer overturned on the 'Ewa off-ramp. The accident injured a teenage male, said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services spokesman.

Sheets of cardboard littered the grassy area of the off-ramp, which remained closed as investigators examined the wreckage to determine what made the big rig flip over.

Firefighters also were on the scene to clean up spilled fuel with absorbent material, said Honolulu fire Capt. Robert Main.

Then an hour later, a man in Ka'a'awa was killed when his motorcycle collided with a Hawaiian Telcom truck on Kamehameha Highway. A teenage female was in stable condition, and taken to the same hospital as the man who was pronounced dead, Cheplic said.

He said he did not know if the female was riding on the motorcycle.

The driver of the Hawaiian Telcom truck was on duty at the time of the accident, said Ann Nishida, company spokeswoman.

"We're cooperating fully with the investigation," Nishida said. "It's a police matter now."

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions near the 7-Eleven at 51-0484 Kamehameha Highway. Traffic was re-routed to Hi'iaka and Huamalani streets until the road reopened.

Just a few miles up the road in Hau'ula — also at noon — police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions to investigate a crash involving a bicyclist near a 7-Eleven Store.

A man in his 50s was taken to a local trauma center following the crash at 54-138 Kamehameha Highway, Cheplic said.

Traffic was temporarily detoured through Rainbow Castle parking until Kamehameha Highway was reopened more than two hours later.
