A nationally renowned football player and King Kekaulike's first inductee highlight the 2009 Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Foundation Hall of Honor class, announced yesterday by a 15-member selection committee.

The 12 inductees will officially be enshrined at an HHSAA Foundation Awards Dinner at 5 p.m. June 7 at the Sheraton Waikiki.

They are:

  • Breland Almadova, 'Iolani (football, baseball);

  • Tani Costa, Kalani (soccer);

  • Jray Galea'i, Kahuku (football, basketball);

  • Taylor Ibera, Farrington (judo, wrestling);

  • Bryce Jenkins, Leilehua (cross country, track);

  • Kristin Lim, Punahou (tennis, soccer);

  • Kela Marciel, 'Iolani (football, basketball, baseball);

  • Bailey Massenburg, King Kekaulike (cross country, track);

  • Aisha Price, Punahou (soccer, water polo);

  • Meleana Shim, Kamehameha (soccer);

  • Christel Simms, Punahou (swimming);

  • Manti Te'o, Punahou (football, basketball).

    The Honolulu Advertiser will be a title sponsor of the Hall for the third straight year. It was previously known as the Nissan Hawai'i High School Hall of Honor.

    This year's class will bring the total number of inductees to 324, representing 53 high schools since 1983.

    The banquet's keynote speaker will be ESPN SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett, and proceeds from the dinner will go toward the HHSAA Foundation, which helps supplement the costs of 32 state championship events.

    Primary consideration was given to athletic achievement, but other factors included academics, character and school/community service.

    Leading this year's class is Te'o, who was showered with national awards and recognition last December after helping guide the Buffanblu to their first football state championship.

    He is regarded as the most highly recruited college prospect from Hawai'i to date, eventually signing a letter of intent to play for the University of Notre Dame.

    Massenburg is the first inductee from King Kekaulike, which had its first graduating class in 1999.

    She won three gold medals at last weekend's Island Movers Track and Field State Championships, in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs and the 4 X 400 relay. Massenburg also won the 800 and 1,500 state titles as a junior and captured the cross country state championship last fall.

    Almadova was an Advertiser DII All-State defensive back in football and led the Raiders to their first Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball title since 1997.

    Costa was a national-level player who was a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection.

    Galea'i was an Advertiser All-State first-team selection in football and basketball, helping the Red Raiders win O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships in both.

    Jenkins became only the second boy to win three individual cross country state titles, and also set a state meet record last weekend in the 3,000-meter run.

    Ibera became only the third judoka to win four individual state championships after completing an undefeated career. She also won two individual wrestling state titles.

    Lim won three individual tennis state championships and one doubles state title.

    Marciel was one of Hawai'i's premier three-sport athletes for the past three years — helping the Raiders win two straight Division II state championships in football, a DI boys basketball state title in 2006 and the ILH baseball title this past season.

    Price was named Advertiser All-State Co-Player of the Year after helping Punahou snap Kamehameha's three-year stranglehold on the girls soccer state championship. She also helped the Buffanblu win their second straight water polo state title.

    Shim was a three-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection who was All-State Co-Player of the Year this past season.

    Simms holds state meet records in the 100-yard backstroke, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, and also was a member of two state meet record relay teams: in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle.
