Fair makes symphony family-friendly

Many parents might think twice about taking children to a full symphony performance, but Saturday's Symphony Fair at the Waikiki Shell offers a family-style option for enjoying local orchestras, ensembles, choruses and a mass horn choir together.
Some family members can enjoy the music, while others can check out the "musical instrument petting zoo," hit the concession stands, get their faces painted and participate in other activities.
The Honolulu Symphony's fundraiser features 20 performing groups from all over O'ahu, along with autograph sessions with Jake Shimabukuro (right), Jimmy Borges and others.
The fair runs from noon to 5 p.m.; $3 adults, free for children under 10. Information: www.honolulusymphony.com.
