Punchbowl parking limited, so try a bus

 •  Commemorations for Memorial Day

City bus service will be available Monday for those attending Memorial Day observations at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

The main event, the mayor's ceremony, begins at 8:30 a.m. and cemetery parking is very limited.

All stops along TheBus' Route 15 (Makiki/Pacific Heights) will be serviced.

Free parking will be available at the civic center lot for motorists who wish to board the bus across the street at the Alapai Transit Center.

Pickup at that bus stop will be from 7 to 8 a.m.

Destination signs on the buses will read "15 Punchbowl" and "15 Alapai Transit Center" (on the return bus).

Regular fares of $2 for adults and $1 for youths (grades 1-12) will prevail. Monthly bus passes will be accepted, and elderly and disabled passes will be honored.

For information on the Memorial Day ceremony, call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 768-3002.

For bus route information, go to www.thebus.org or call 848-5555.

Also, traffic controls will be put in place today at the Punchbowl cemetery in anticipation of heavy Memorial Day weekend visits.

From today through Monday, a police officer will be stationed at each of the following intersections:

  • Tantalus and Puowaina drives.

  • Puowaina Drive and Hookui Street.

  • Ho'okui and Auwaiolimu streets.

Left turns from Ho'okui to Auwaiolimu will be prohibited.

Traffic flow within the cemetery will be one-way during the weekend. Cemetery personnel will direct traffic.
