Tennis: Serbia beats Germany to win World Team Cup

Associated Press

DUESSELDORF, Germany — Serbia defeated Germany to win the World Team Cup on Saturday, becoming only the second team in the tournament's 32-year history to hoist the trophy on its debut.

Viktor Troicki claimed a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Rainer Schuettler and Janko Tipsarevic sealed the victory by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-4.

Serbia joined Yugoslavia as the only teams to win the cup on their debuts. Yugoslavia managed the feat in 1990 when it beat Sweden. Croatia lost the final to Sweden on its debut in 1995.

Germany was playing in the final for the seventh time, after victories in 1989, '94, '98 and 2005 and runner-up finishes in 1993 and 2006.
