BOSTON — Johan Santana did fine against the Boston Red Sox hitters. His own fielders gave him problems.

The ace lefty should be used to it.

The New York Mets won, 5-3, last night despite making three errors. More than a third of their miscues, 12 of 35, have occurred in Santana's starts. And only 10 of the 17 runs he's allowed this season have been earned.

"After a mistake or error, you try and bounce back and get the next guy," Santana said. "That's what I was doing."

All three errors, two by shortstop Ramon Martinez and one by third baseman David Wright, came with fewer than two outs, and Santana (6-2) retired all the batters who followed in those three innings.

"He doesn't let it get in the way," Martinez said.

Santana allowed two earned runs, six hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out eight.

New York broke a four-game losing streak and never trailed after Gary Sheffield's 502nd career homer and third of the season made it 1-0 in the second. Jason Varitek's eighth homer tied it in the bottom of the inning before New York took the lead for good against Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2) with three runs in the fourth.

ORIOLES 4, NATIONALS 2:

Veteran reliever Danys Baez got his first major league hit in the 12th inning to spark a two-run uprising, and visiting Baltimore beat Washington to end a four-game losing streak. With the Baltimore bench down to one player in this interleague duel, Baez reached on a squibber down the third-base line against Kip Wells (0-2) with two outs and no one on base. After Brian Roberts followed with a ground-rule double, Adam Jones lined a two-run double into the left-field corner.

ANGELS 3, DODGERS 1

Chone Figgins hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning, leading the visiting Angels over the Dodgers. Kendry Morales and Gary Matthews Jr. opened the eighth with singles against Cory Wade (0-3). Howie Kendrick tried to bunt the runners over, but Wade got the force at third. The right-hander then walked pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis and Figgins followed with his clutch hit to right field.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, ATHLETICS 1

Chris Young homered for the first time in more than a month, Billy Buckner (1-0) won in his first start since 2007 and visiting Arizona beat Oakland. Buckner, recalled from Triple-A Reno before the game, pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, allowing only Matt Holiday's solo homer in the second.

MARINERS 2, GIANTS 1

Jose Lopez hit an RBI single off the wall in the 12th inning as host Seattle beat San Francisco. San Francisco's Justin Miller (1-1) walked Wladimir Balentien leading off the 12th. Pat Misch entered and Russell Branyan singled off him, sending Balentien to third. Rob Johnson walked to load the bases before Lopez's shot.

PHILLIES 7, YANKEES 3

Jimmy Rollins sent A.J. Burnett's first pitch of the night deep over the right-field scoreboard, and Jayson Werth, Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez also homered as visiting Philadelphia rolled in the first interleague game at new Yankee Stadium and ended New York's nine-game winning streak. The Phillies' Brett Myers (4-2) allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings.

Casey Kotchman drove in the only run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.

RAYS 15, MARLINS 2

Andy Sonnanstine (3-4) allowed only five baserunners and one run in six innings, and visiting Tampa Bay had three homers among its 17 hits. The Rays scored eight runs in the first two innings off Ricky Nolasco (2-5). They batted around in the second inning and again in the third to take a 13-0 lead.

TWINS 11, BREWERS 3

Michael Cuddyer hit for the cycle and matched his career high with five RBIs as host Minnesota defeated Milwaukee. Cuddyer hit a three-run homer in the first inning, doubled in the third and singled in the fourth before completing the cycle by tripling on a broken-bat liner into the left-field corner in the sixth.

Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled and scored two runs in his first start for San Diego since coming over via a trade with Milwaukee on Thursday.
