Wie is 10 off pace in Corning

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Rookie Michelle Wie rebounded with a second-round, 5-under-par 67 yesterday to make the cut in the LPGA Corning Classic at Conring, N.Y.

Wie, a Punahou alum and Stanford sophomore who opened with a 73 on Thursday, has a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 at the Corning Country Club.

Icher, the first-round co-leader at 8 under with Hee Young Park of South Korea, was at 14-under 130. That broke the 36-hole record for the tournament by one shot and equaled the best back-to-back rounds in Corning history.

Seon Hwa Lee (67), Soo-Yun Kang (69) and Na Yeon Choi (68) of South Korea were tied for third at 10-under 134.

"If the other players can make birdies, I can do it, too," said Icher, whose best career finish was a second in 2005 at the Corona Morelia Championship. "I know you learn more from your mistakes. I did a lot in the past. I was short to win some tournaments in '05 and '06. I hope right now it's going to help me go forward and I don't make the same mistakes."

This is the final Corning Classic, the smallest event on the LPGA Tour and the only one that's had the same title sponsor and been staged at the same venue every year since its inception (1979). Tournament officials announced in April that they could not afford to renew their contract.

PGA TOUR

IRVING, Texas — Rory Sabbatini shot a season-best 6-under 64 to gain a share of the second-round lead with John Mallinger at the Byron Nelson Championship.

Mallinger eagled both par 5s at the TPC Four Seasons and made a 15-foot birdie putt on his final hole for a 65 to match Sabbatini at 8-under 132.

First-round co-leader James Nitties (68), Brian Davis (65), Briny Baird (64), James Driscoll and Dustin Johnson (65) were at 133. Dean Wilson, a Castle High alum, shot 69—142 and missed the cutoff score of 139.

SENIOR PGA

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Scotland's Ross Drummond shot a 4-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Senior PGA Championship.

The 52-year-old Drummond had a 4-under 136 total at Canterbury Golf Club. Tom Purtzer, whose 66 tied him for the first-round lead with Scott Hoch, faded to a 72 and was at 138 with Hoch, Jeff Sluman (68), Larry Mize (69) and Bernhard Langer (70).

EUROPEAN PGA

VIRGINIA WATER, England — England's Paul Casey shot a 5-under 67 at historic Wentworth to take a two-stroke lead in the BMW PGA Championship. Casey had an 8-under 136 total. Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez (70), David Horsey (71), Anthony Wall (71) and Soren Kjeldsen (69) were at 138.
