Infant dies in crash on the Big Island

An infant was killed her her mother critically injured Saturday evening when their car was stuck by a pick-up truck on Kuakini Highway on the Big Island.

The accident occurred at 7:28 p.m. at the intersection of Kuakini Highway and Lako Street, Hawaiçi County Fire Department said. The woman, in her 20s, and the infant were taken to Kona Community Hospital, where the baby later died. The woman remains in critical condition. The occupants of the pick-up truck were uninjured.
Officials rerouted traffic during the investigation onto Highway 180 and Alii Drive. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
