'Bows to interview Petersen for coach

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawai'i assistant coach Gavin Petersen is interviewing for the Rainbow Wahine basketball coaching job, a sign the process remains fluid.

Petersen had been picked to be a finalist last week, was then scratched 24 hours later and then, again, recently returned to the list of candidates to receive an interview with the selection committee, people at the school confirmed.

Just how many others are finalists — or if the latest round will even hold up as final — is apparently unknown with people in the athletic department saying they are "unsure."

Petersen, 32, a University High graduate, is women's basketball associate head coach at the University of Idaho. He was an assistant at UH from 2002-04 and an assistant and associate head coach at Idaho State for four years under Jon Newlee, whom he followed to Moscow. Newlee is a former UH assistant, who Petersen succeeded in Manoa in 2002.

At least one other Hawai'i high school graduate has been interviewed this week, George Wolfe. Wolfe, 55, a Kalani High graduate is a former head coach at Portland State and a 13-year UH assistant.

He is a coach and assistant athletic director at Georgetown Prep Academy in Maryland, and is an instructor at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camps.
