Humane Society euthanizes 54 injured fighting cocks

Advertiser Staff

The Kaua'i Humane Society has taken more than 125 fighting cocks into custody after police confiscated them from a cockfight in Kapa'a, the Garden Island newspaper reported.

A Kaua'i Police Department unit also seized $70,000 in cash during the March 15 raid.

Kaua'i Humane Society Executive Director Becky Rhoades said many of the roosters had to be euthanized because they had severe lacerations. Seventy-one are alive.

Rhoades said many of the birds were wearing gaffs, or sharp knives that are tied to their legs for fighting.

Rhoades said her organization always responds in these cases because it feels it's important the roosters aren't released into the wild. She said they would be used again for gambling if they're released.
