Pitchers dominate at Sugar Mill

WAIPAHU—Pitchers stole the show at the 11th Sugar Mill Classic senior all-star baseball game yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

If you blinked, you might have missed the only run of the game when Kaiser's Bryce Marcoullier lined a one-out, triple down the right-field line to score Mililani's Jordan Queja in the sixth inning to lift the Gray Team over the White Team, 1-0.

"I was waiting for a fastball," Marcoullier said. "I got a fastball first pitch, hit it."

The designated home White team came close to tying it in the bottom of the sixth with runners at first and second with two outs, but Punahou's Tyler Hanzawa was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second on Kailua's Reyn Matsuki's single to right. Kamehameha right fielder Arlie Johnson hit the cutoff man, first baseman Kinohi Kelly-Paleka of Moloka'i, who then fired to catcher Tyler Young of Punahou to get Hanzawa and preserve Gray's lead.

The Grays nearly scored again in the eighth, when 'Iolani's Reyn Nagamine doubled to the right-center alley after Pearl City's Carlton Tanabe reached first on an error. But Tanabe was nailed at the plate to end the inning.

Each team used seven pitchers. Gray starter Jeremy Fujimoto and Moloka'i's Scottie Rapanot each pitched two scoreless innings, as did White starter Matt McDaniel of Mid-Pacific and Kamehameha's Alika Pruett.

In all, both teams' pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts. 'Iolani's JR Bunda of the Gray struck out all three batters he faced.

The game featured seniors, or in Kamehameha's case, recent graduates, from around the state. In some cases, classmates found themselves on opposing sides.

"It's fun," said McDaniel, who signed to play with San Diego State. "It's the last time in high school. Just playing with all the high school seniors was fun."

The event was sponsored by CUSO of Hawai'i Services, Northwestern Mutual Finan-cial Networks, Grace Pacific and Hawaii Winter Baseball. Game organizer Casey Onaga said the sponsors helped off set expenses, such as the game uniforms.
