Horseman dies in a fall on steep wilderness trail

Advertiser Staff

A man who died in an equestrian accident at the Haleakala National Park Monday has been identified as Edward Wilson of Maui.

Wilson died after he apparently fell while riding a horse on the Halemau'u Trail, a steep trail in the Haleakala crater. Maui Fire Department and the National Park Service received a call at about 1 p.m. Monday that a man had fallen off the trail.

Because of the steep terrain and cloudy weather, rescue crews were unable to recover Wilson's body until first light yesterday. The trail was closed Monday night and early yesterday while park rangers investigated the incident.

The Park Service said Wilson was an experienced horseman and frequent visitor to the park's wilderness area.
