NFL: 49ers sweeten deal to build stadium in Santa Clara

Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have sweetened the terms of a deal to build a new stadium in the South Bay city of Santa Clara.

Officials with the 49ers and Santa Clara on Friday released details of a proposed agreement that calls for the city to contribute $79 million toward the $937 million project.
The team had previously asked the city to contribute $222 million to build the 68,500-seat stadium.
City officials say the stadium would generate hundreds of jobs and tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue, but critics worry it will create traffic problems.
The Santa Clara City Council is set to take up the proposal Tuesday and possibly vote on whether to support it.
The proposal could go before Santa Clara voters in March.
