Akana shot a 556 to win the girls title.

"It feels good to win. It was nerve-racking because I was one of the first people here," said Akana, who was dropped off two hours before the championships started. "When I won, it was overwhelming."

BASEBALL

DIVISION I

MAY 9, LES MURAKAMI STADIUM

Team: Punahou

Recap: After an up-and-down season and barely making the state tournament, the Buffanblu won a record sixth straight state title with a 3-2 victory over Kailua.

Despite its state championship history, the Buffanblu (15-8) had a different lineup this year after losing seven starters from last year's team.

"It just makes it that much sweeter," said senior pitcher Jeremy Fujimoto, who earned the save in the title game and finished the tournament with one win and two saves in four games. "Being a senior, I couldn't ask for anything more."

Fujimoto, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, got a strikeout to end a Kailua rally and strand runners on first and third.

He then struck out the first two batters in the seventh and got the final out on a grounder to third.

Freshman Zachery Muenster allowed five hits but no runs through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He played the entire regular season on the JV and was called up after the Buffanblu secured their state berth by beating Mid-Pacific in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's third-place game on April 30.

DIVISION II

MAY 9, LES MURAKAMI STADIUM

Team: Maryknoll

Recap: Joshua Arakaki's two-out single drove in Tyler Todd in the bottom of the seventh to beat defending champion Kaua'i, 3-2.

Arakaki hit the first pitch off the second baseman's glove and into right field. Todd slid in just ahead of the throw.

"I never thought it was going to come down to me in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on base," said Arakaki, who was batting 0 for 3 before his game-winning hit. "I'm glad it did. I'm glad I pulled it off."

Maryknoll went 2-14 against Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I teams before winning four straight in the tournament.

"A lot of people had negative thoughts," said Maryknoll's Craig Shoji, who pitched a five-hitter. "Everyone who said we couldn't be here, we proved them wrong. We can be here and we can win."

BASKETBALL

BOYS, DIVISION I

MARCH 7, NEAL BLAISDELL ARENA

Team: Kamehameha

Recap: Pi'i Minns scored a game-high 20 points, including 10 in the fourth period and the go-ahead basket with 1:22 remaining to help the Warriors beat Kahuku, 47-45, for their first state title since 1992.

"I felt I had to take over (in the fourth quarter), because everybody else was doing their part," Minn said. "I couldn't ask anything more from them, and I wanted to finish my career with no regrets."

Kamehameha (14-1) rallied from a 39-36 deficit with 5:15 left and led 44-42 on Minns' go-ahead basket. The Warriors survived a 62-57 triple-overtime win over Kaimuki in the semifinals.

BOYS, DIVISION II

MARCH 7, NEAL BLAISDELL ARENA

Team: Kailua

Recap: Dylan Farias scored 18 points, and Kenny Ellis and Corey Lau added 13 each to lead Kailua to a 53-36 win over Castle.

"We wanted to push the ball and play half-court defense," said Kailua coach Tim Harrison, whose team led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. "Our defense did outstanding tonight."

Kailua (18-3) also won state titles in 1972 and 1982 when there was a one-division format.

GIRLS DIVISION I

FEB. 27, NEAL BLAISDELL ARENA

Team: Konawaena

Recap: With three freshmen and a sophomore in the starting lineup, a youthful Konawaena team rallied past Punahou, 54-50, in double overtime for its third state championship in six years.

Punahou erased a 10-point deficit in regulation and both teams made just one free throw in the first overtime.

Freshman Lia Galdeira finished with a game-high 23 points, along with nine rebounds and four steals for the Wildcats (15-0). Galdeira put Konawaena ahead 47-45 on a layup — its first field goal since midway through the fourth quarter — with 2:23 remaining in the second OT.

"You saw some of their youthfulness tonight, you saw them breaking down a bit," Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. "But they came through in the end."

GIRLS DIVISION II

FEB. 27, NEAL BLAISDELL ARENA

Team: Moloka'i

Recap: Kalei Adolpho made the go-ahead putback with 12 seconds remaining and finished with 21 points and 19 rebounds to help the Farmers beat Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 45-42.

Adolpho's putback made it 44-42 and came after Kylie Joe Mawae missed from the right side and Jolenta Duvauchelle missed a couple of follow-up attempts in the paint. After a Kamehameha-Hawai'i traveling violation and an Adolpho free throw, the Warriors missed a 3-point attempt from the right wing as time expired.

The Farmers (15-0) held the Warriors to just three free throws and 0-12 field-goal shooting in the fourth.

"That has been our emphasis all year," Adolpho said of her team's defensive effort. "Everybody was just really staying with their man and trying their hardest to stay with it."

Kamehameha totaled 320 points to repeat in the large division.

Recap: Jenkins capped off a brilliant career by becoming just the second runner to win three straight state titles. He won the 3-mile race in 17:13.00 and helped the Mules defend their state team title with a meet-low 75 points.

"I didn't know I was going to win until like about the last half-mile," said Jenkins, who missed most of the season while recovering from a stress fracture. "I went into the race knowing to give it my all and nothing less. I pretty much figured it out with about a half-mile left."

Leilehua's Margarito Martinez placed fourth in 18:01.10, followed by Shannon Cosey (13th, 18:47.40) and Shannon White (21st, 19:08.15) and Noel Cabato (51st, 19:54.10).

King Kekaulike senior Bailey Massenburg won the 3-mile race in 20:42.90.

"The course is a really tough course, it has a lot of different terrains, which is cool, like a real cross country course," Massenburg said. "The really big hill is the most important part of the race; a lot of runners pull their moves or back down."

FOOTBALL

DIVISION I

DEC. 5, 2008, ALOHA STADIUM

Team: Punahou

Recap: Behind an air-tight defense, Punahou won its first-ever state title with a 38-7 win over defending champion Leilehua.

Punahou quarterback Cayman Shutter threw for two touchdowns and 400 yards, and ran in another score. Teammate Manti Te'o, the nation's top linebacker, had eight tackles.

When the clock ran out, Te'o gave coach Kale Ane a big hug on the sidelines.

"I told you I'd get you one," Te'o said to Ane.

The Buffanblu (12-1) intercepted Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley four times. They also sacked him five times and hurried him into errant throws.

"It was an unusual season for us. David was playing varsity volleyball and we only had him half time and he played in only half our matches," said 'Iolani coach Glenn Inouye, whose team finished with a 601 total. The Trojans (16-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Kishti Kamaka shut out the Rough Riders, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champions who were making their first state title game appearance since 1986, over the final four innings and finished with six strikeouts.
