Kauai man arrested after allegedly driving into ocean

Advertiser Staff

A homeless Kauai man has been arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, second degree reckless endangering and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant after allegedly driving a Ford van into the ocean at Anini Beach Park on Saturday, Kauai officials said.

Witnesses told police that John Robert Garrick was driving down Anini Road around 1:39 p.m. when he allegedly turned into the park and accelerated toward the ocean.
Garrick then drove off a retaining wall, went airborne and landed in shallow water, officials said.
He reportedly continued to drive the van until it became stuck in the sand. Garrick then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, officials said.
Garrick was being held in police custody, unable to post bail. The van was removed from the beach.
