Maui and Kauai top isles: Maui and Kauai have been named the top two Pacific islands in the Condé Nast Traveler 2009 Readers' Choice Awards published in the magazine's November issue. The Big Island was ranked sixth, Oahu seventh and Länai came in eighth.

The magazine's awards contest asks readers to rank the world's best hotels, resorts, cruise lines, cities and airlines. More than 25,000 participated this year.

Kauai Beach Resort: The Hilton Kauai Beach Resort, now managed by Honolulu-based Aqua Hotels and Resorts, will be renamed the Kauai Beach Resort beginning Jan. 1. Aqua was selected to manage the Kauai Beach Hotel in July.

Kaanapali beach hotel: Käanapali Beach Hotel will host the 19th annual celebration of "Hula O Na Keiki," Maui's keiki solo hula event.

Eight hälau from Hawaii and Japan will compete for $15,000 in cash and prizes in an event promoting the Hawaiian culture through music and dance. The hula competition begins Friday at 5 p.m. (doors open at 4 p.m.), and concludes Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. (doors open at 1 p.m.).

Plate lunches, salads and desserts will be on sale throughout the weekend; free off-site parking is available with shuttle service to the hotel, or guests may use the valet service for $11.

Tickets are at Käanapali Beach Hotel's Ohana Fun Center and Native Intelligence at 45 Market St. in Wailuku. $15 each night for adults; $6 ages 12 and under, and $20 for reserved seating (sold only at Käanapali Beach Hotel). Premium seats are $25.
