Gen. Xu Caihou, the second-highest officer in China’s military, wrapped up a visit to the United States this morning by paying a call to U.S. Pacific Command at Camp Smith.

Xu’s meeting with Adm. Robert Willard, head of Pacific Command, follows meetings with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and President Obama.
As part of his visit to Hawaii, Xu presented photo albums and commemorative coins to Hawaii Air National Guard Majs. Anthony Davis and Troy Cullen and Air Force Capt. Billy Dye, who helped deliver 200,000 pounds of relief supplies to China following a destructive earthquake in May, 2008.
Xu is scheduled to return to Beijing tomorrow.
Xu, who holds the title of vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, People’s Liberation Army, also visited Fort Benning in Georgia, Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and the carrier USS Ronald Reagan in San Diego.
The tour is part of Gates’ effort to break what he calls the cycle of “on-again, off-again” military-to-military relations between the U.S. and China.
