A way to guarantee more fans in stands

By Ferd Lewis

When things go bad, sometimes desperate measures are called for.

And, let's face it, the University of Hawai 'i has not been this desperate for a football victory since the history-making 0-12 season of 1998.

The Warriors are 2-6 (0-5 in the Western Athletic Conference) and have lost six consecutive games. And, as it happens, Saturday they are playing Utah State, which is also 2-6 and has lost four of its last five.

With plenty of seats to fill at increasingly spacious Aloha Stadium, it is, dare we say, time for Guaranteed Win Night?

GWN, which is the promotional progeny of the late baseball owner/impresario Bill Veeck, was envisioned as a life preserver for difficult times.

Times like these, for example.

Under the concept, if the home team doesn't win a specified game, fans in attendance are guaranteed a free ticket for a subsequent game.

It seizes upon the desperation of the situation to give fans something to talk about when there are no titles to be played for or compelling matchups to follow. It gives the team a game to rally around and, hopefully, supplies a shot in the arm at the box office at a time of declining revenue.

Of course, UH would be out some tickets next week should the Warriors not beat Utah State but if the losing streak were to reach seven in a row, really, how many walk-up tickets would you be selling anyway?

Especially since the following opponent, New Mexico State, is 3-6.

If the Warriors are to make a stand, end their frustration and put up some wins, this is the part of the season where they will have to do it — against Utah State, New Mexico State and San Jose State (1-6). If not Utah State, then who? And, if not this week at home, then, when?

Under these circumstances it is unlikely the usual promotions: half-price tickets for students, season ticket holders, military, etc. will lure a whole lot of folks. Appeals to fringe fans have already been tried.

When it was suggested, apparently half in jest, to some of the powers that be at UH that GWN be given a shot, the idea didn't get very far, we're told. But that was before the last loss. Taking stock now, it is an idea that should be reconsidered and acted upon.

After all, at this point, what has UH got to, well, lose?
